Patom Chair is light on its feet.
A lightweight chair with a subtle presence can sit comfortably in various settings, such as dining rooms, cafes or libraries. Patom chair is a bespoke design for Patom Organic Village and produced by Corner 43 Decor. It was drawn from straight lines and tangental curves, a simple silhouette with considerate details.
The composition of the rear legs define the chair, they are peeled away from the seat to divide the visual mass and lighten the chair’s appearance. The peeled away legs also allow 4 Patom chairs to stack.
To prepare for the weave, rattan is soaked in water to soften its fiber, making it more flexible. Once woven, rattan is flashed with flame to burn away any fine splinters. Over time, the woven seat will stretch slightly. And to avoid feeling the front edge, the front bar is lowered and the front weave is curved down.
Rattan is native to South East Asia and it is naturally resilient to tropical heat and humidity. Many rattan furniture can last over 20-30 years and they are highly restorable. We hope to have the pleasure of seeing well-used Patom chairs in the many years to come.
Patom chair is locally designed and manufactured within 50km radius of Bangkok, where our studio is based. The close proximities let us be more hands on with the process and more organic in the collaboration. All in all, making things locally is very fun.
